Review: How to Survive Your Murder by Danielle Valentine

When your older sister- the one who’s braver, more social, and the one who is always protecting you- gets brutally murdered in front of you because you weren’t with her the one time she asks… what do you do? The answer for Alice is to fight tooth and nail for her sister’s justice. Her life slowly falling apart around her, Alice fears that even if her killer is put behind bars it will never truly fix anything. The morning she’s meant to testify against the murderer as the sole witness she is transported into the past by a mysterious person and she soon realizes she’s come back on the night she lost her sister and this is her chance to change what happened. I cannot describe how incredible the ending is without spoilers, so you’ll have to take my word for it.

This book is a thrilling and emotional murder mystery that left me wide-eyed. It made me so desperate for the leading protagonist to get back her old life and her sister. The only downsides are that the beginning is a little unbelievable since the supernatural aspects aren’t as fleshed out, as well as being on the slower side of thriller novels.

As someone who reads horror and mystery quite frequently, plot twist endings rarely fool me. I’ve come to accept that as a fact. However my assumption of what the plot twist would be set me up perfectly to be actually shocked at what happened. When the “plot twist” I thought everyone was talking about in the other reviews happened I thought I was right yet again and was blissfully unaware until I was hit with not one but two more plot twists that hit me over the head like a hammer.

Perhaps if I knew there were more twists I wouldn’t have been surprised. Perhaps I was just in the right mindset at the specific time I read it. I do not often enjoy mystery books nearly as much as I loved this one. But regardless my five star rating is well deserved.

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Oh goodness gracious this was amazing. WHen I saw reviews saying “I didn’t see the twist coming!!” or “I can’t believe she went there!!” I was like, “yeah right…” but they were right! I knew a twist was coming, and I even figured out one that I thought was going to be the big twist but it wasn’t. There wasn’t just one twist at the end leaving me SHAKEN- there were multiple. Amazing book.
